| The first time I moved
from my single apartment to my married house.
by Anne Garrett
As far as I can remember, I always liked parties. At the time,
I was living in France in the suburbs of Paris. I had a nice
little apartment that I loved and spend so much time decorating.
I was receiving my friends all the time, gather around a good
dinner and have a lot of laughs. My girlfriends and I were
partying every week, sometimes 2 to 3 times a week until 5
o’clock in the morning!
That was on the Week End, because on a school night, that’s
how I called my job nights (I was working in a company for
5 years and had responsibilities), anyway, on a school night,
we used to go out until 2 am, and believe me, it was very
hard to wake up the next morning to go to work ! I always
had to apply a little more make up just to cover my tired
eyes! I have been living single for almost 15 years, or I
had some boyfriend, but I did not want to lose my freedom,
so we each stayed in our own home. After a big heartache,
I said to myself, no more men for some time! And then, one
day, as I was surfing the internet, I came across something
very unusual and different for me.
A dating site, called Match.com, no need to tell its popularity.
So I wanted to have fun and just gave it a try. I filled in
a profile and waited. The next morning as I turned on my email,
I had 10 messages of people from Match.com. Woaa ! I could
not believe it, does this thing really works or what! Anyway,
I opened the messages and began to read. Some of them were
very nice, but others were just very weird! I really had to
screen those little visitors. After a few weeks, I completely
forgot about this thing. I was working at my desk, when a
beep of a new email came around.
So, as usual I opened my email and I saw a message from a
men living in the USA, in Louisiana. I read his message and
at the end I was very impressed! I replied, which was the
first one I replied to in all those messages that I had! The
days were passing by and we were still communicating on email,
then 3 months passed and we decided to call each other. And
that’s when it hit me! I had an OUTRAGES phone bill!
Because believe me, calling from France to the USA at 10 pm
until 5 am French time, it’s no picnic, it cost! But
he had one too, so it kind of comforted me. We chatted a lot
trying to know each other a little better. After 6 months,
he had an opportunity to go to England as a reservist Navy.
What could be more perfect! We would be only 2000 miles away
instead of 10 000!!! No more BIG phone bills and staying up
until 5 am.
Finally we were living together almost at the same time. But
virtual is nice. Comes a time were one has to meet! And that
was the nervous and stressful part of it! Or we have seen
each other through pictures and all, but meeting in person
is a WHOLE different story! So we met one morning at the Gare
du Nord in Paris, and the chemistry was here. We spend a couple
of months going back and forth from Paris to London, We definitely
made a good profit to Eurotunnel and a little whole in our
wallets. But it was worth it. After a few months together
he proposed to me so romantically! We decided to spend New
Years Eve in Normandy, and he never been there before, so
it was a good opportunity for him to finally see all the D
Day beaches, he’s a big history buff.
I booked a nice little restaurant that night, and decided
to take the sea food platter, but in France the sea food platter
is an enormous dish of raw shells, oysters, scallops and more.
That’s the way we, French like to eat it. Fresh picked
from the sea. Then, I remember, I think it was between a mussel
and a scallop that my at the time boyfriend, presented in
front of me in a very beautiful blue shell box, a RING! I
almost chocked on my food, but of course I said yes. It was
the most romantic proposal that was very shortly saddened
by the fact that I should’ve avoided that gargantuan
dish.
I was sick all night with very nasty gastro enteritis and
spent 24 hours at the hospital, admiring my newly beautiful
engagement ring in my hospital bed. But, like every story
has a happy ended, when we returned to Paris I called all
my family and tell them about the exciting news. And 4 months
later we were married! AU REVOIR the single life and the single
apartment. I moved to the United States and now live in my
married home full of joy and happiness. We have a little boy
of 2 ½ years, I speak French to him and everyday remember
our little engagement ordeal and even though I was sick, was
the first most beautiful day of my life, the second being
my wedding and my baby’s birth.
This is the best victory and accomplishment in my life, being
a mother and a wife; and I always tell to myself, sometimes
fate is just around the corner and you just can’t elude
it.
